| YOGA FACTS |
|
Yoga is Not a Religion
While the complete forms of yoga include meditation and other spiritual practices, it is not a religion and is mainly known in the West simply as a form of exercise. |
| ------------------------------------------------- |
Yoga is All About Breath
The core of yoga is about long, deep breathing, in and out through the nose. This has major health benefits, especially when combined with yoga’s various poses and postures. “Ujai” breathing is practiced with the throat slightly constricted which causes a bit of a windy sound. It’s purpose is to control and channel the air flowing in and out of the lungs. |
| --------------------------------------------------- |
Yoga is Non Competitive.
Even though we often compare ourselves to the person on the mat next to us, it’s really unnecessary. Everyone has a different level of flexibility and so they’ll naturally find their limits. Not everyone is able to do postures to the same level of perfection as someone else and there’s simply no need to concern yourself with other people’s progress. |
| --------------------------------------------------- |
Yoga is Safe
Just about anyone can practice yoga, from children all the way up to senior citizens. While beginners might want to avoid Ashtanga, the basic ethos of all other yoga practices is “go at your own pace.” Care and caution should always be practiced when doing any form of exercise and yoga is perfectly safe for all levels of flexibility. |

| Yoga Classes |
|
Traditionally, yoga is used to cleanse and purify the body spiritually. Here in the west, we use yoga to promote health, fitness and mental stability, working on the union between the body and mind.
In a yoga class you can expect to do some breathing exercises, hold challenging positions and quiet the mind which sometimes is the most difficult part of class. |

| YOGA's PAST |
|
| In Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism the word yoga means "spiritual discipline". People often associate yoga with the postures and stances that make up the physical activity of the exercise, but after closer inspection it becomes clear that there are many more aspects of yoga. It is an activity that has been practiced for thousands of years, and it is something that has evolved and changed overtime. Different factions of yoga have developed since its conception. |
| ------------------------------------------------- |
| The exact history and origins of yoga is uncertain; however, there are pieces that have been connected and allow us to make some conclusions. It is known that yoga originated from the East. The earliest signs of yoga appear in ancient Shamanism. Evidence of yoga postures were found on artifacts that date back to 3000 B.C. Evidence of yoga is found in the oldest-existing text, Rig-Veda. Rig-Veda is a composition of hymns. Topics of the Rig-Veda include prayer, divine harmony, and greater being. |
| --------------------------------------------------- |
| Yoga originally focused on applying and understanding the world. Its focus later changed to the self. Self-enlightenment became the ultimate goal.It was not until the sixth century B.C. that the poses and meditation became a critical element. They were implimented by Buddhist teachings. |
| --------------------------------------------------- |
Modern yoga is based on five basic principles that were created by Swami Sivananda.
1. Proper relaxation
2. Proper exercise
3. Proper breathing
4. Proper diet
5. Positive thinking and meditation |
